PCU or Polymer Coated Urea is a controlled-release fertilizer component in which a urea granule is encapsulated by a plastic polymer which spreads the typical release of urea nitrogen into the soil over an extended period of time. PCU's rate of release is driven primarily by temperature and moisture through micropores in the coating, often referred to as temperature-controlled diffusion and osmotic pressure.

Overall, PCU's most significant benefit as a controlled-release nitrogen source is its prolonged nitrogen release duration compared to straight urea.
