Green and Pristine at Quail Hollow
LebanonTurf Plays A Role in Yet Another Major at the 2017 PGA
In preparation for a major tournament, superintendents look for two things from their golf course. It has to be healthy, which breeds consistency and playability, and it has to look good on TV and in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators.
The PGA Championship recently concluded at Quail Hollow Club, with Justin Thomas taking home the Wanamaker Trophy. However, the maintenance crew also deserves some sort of trophy for their preparation, and LebanonTurf was a part of their team throughout the process.
The superintendents used LebanonTurf Country Club M.D. on the greens, tees and approaches. Here’s how that made a difference when the Quail Hollow became the center of the golf world.
Easy Fertilizer During the Toughest Week
Keith Wood, superintendent at Quail Hollow Club, touted the ease of LebanonTurf Products: “It’s very easy to calibrate, it’s very easy to apply, and it’s very easy to water in. And for me, those are the three main components when I look at granular fertility.”
This ease of use became even more welcome when several inches of rain came in the finals days before the tournament. With the crew racing around to ensure the quality of the course, their LebanonTurf products gave them one less thing to worry about.
Two Months of Preparation
In the final few months leading up to the tournament, the crew at Quail Hollow brought in their A-team to make sure everything was perfect. The A-team included LebanonTurf.
“The granular spread from LebanonTurf has been fantastic,” said Shane Omann, assistant superintendent at Quail Hollow Club. “We’ve actually applied it just over the last two months, and it’s really given us the color and the turf health that we’ve needed on our golf course on our greens for the tournament.”
Each Component Plays a Part
In a maintenance crew that’s prepping for a major championship, each person is important. Some rake the bunkers, some drive the fairway mowers, and a select few are in charge of it all. But everyone has a purpose. The same goes for all the components in LebanonTurf products, specifically the Country Club brand.
Keith Wood goes into detail with what results he’s seen from the fertilizer:
“We first got started with the 14-7-14 and saw tremendous results from it. I like the little up-front kick I get from it, and I like the long haul from the methylene urea. I’m getting a great biostimulant load out of the kelp and the humic acid.”
That all translates to greens, tees and approaches that shined in the national TV spotlight.
